Val di Lei
High up in the Alps on the border of Italy and Switzerland in a remote place called Val di Lei sits Restaurant Baita del Capriolo. Baita del Capriolo is run and owned by Valentino and his family. After a long day of climbing we came here to celebrate the end of our Swiss journey, and proceeded to have one of the most memorable meals of my life. There was no menu, we were served what was fresh and in season. All the food was made in house or sourced locally from his family's farms. The wine had no label, and is made by family friends of Valentino. At the end of the meal Valentina joined us for some after dinner drinks Grappa, and another liqueur called Iva, which he he makes from wild flowers that grow in the Alps. We stayed up late drinking, talking about politics, running the restaurant, what life is like living in the Alps, and climbing.
We ended up spending the night in our van next to the lake, because we drink too much Iva with Vale. Next morning his Vale's daughter saw us ,and invited us back up to the restaurant for coffee and breakfast, but this time we were their guests, Valentino refused payment for the breakfast.
Valentino and his family are truly lovely, salt of the earth people and I can't wait to get back up there
